Birding Information

More than 6 million birds pass through the Great Salt Lake area during spring and fall migrations. For a list of some of the birds that you may see on the island, at Fielding Garr Ranch or at other places in the area, please click here.

The 2012 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival will take place May 17-21, 2012.  Most activities originate at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington.

If you need a place to stay during the event, the Country Inn & Suites is the official lodging sponsor.

Kids from grades K-12 are invited to enter the Student Art Contest. Rules and information are available here. Entries must be postmarked by April 1st, 2012. The "subject" for 2012 is TBA.

The Spotlight Bird for 2012 is the Ruddy Duck.  Its a unique small duck, readily identifiable by the male's bluish bill (in breeding plumage), white face, and long, stiff, upright black tail (See photo at the left).  Ruddy Ducks are often reluctant to fly, and when disturbed, often will sink below the surface and swim away underwater like a grebe rather than fly away.  They are nearly incapable of walking on land, with legs and feet set very far back on the body.  Ruddy Ducks are generally relatively tame, making the species susceptible to hunting pressures. Those field trips where Ruddy Ducks are expected, will be highlighted in the Tour Catalog
